You may ask how it became the best, well, Fiber Internet is delivered over light instead of the old fashion electrical data transmission.  Light is just way more faster and less restrictive than electrical impulses. Believe it or not, the Federal Communication Commission has even weighed in on Fiber.  They say, fiber providers consistently offer 117% of advertised speed, even during times of peak demand.

You own or manage an awesome business, but you want to play it safe.  Make sure you steer away from dangerous and disastrous situations.  New technology helps alleviate those types of situations but understandably new technology can be very confusing. So let’s go over some of the high level advantages that come with Fiber Internet.  

 

When you bring fiber internet into your business you can increase your bandwidth greatly.  You see, what you probably have now is delivered over a Copper wire infrastructure and that is “so 1990s”. Copper was created for telephone voice calling and Internet bandwidth need was rather low back in those day.  If you still have voice or data being delivered over a T-1, you are only getting 1.544 Mbps of bandwidth.  That is soooooo tiny.  

 

Not only that, but because the electrical infrastructure is designed the way it is, most of the higher bandwidth options have distance limitations.  If your business is lucky enough to be within 15,000 feet from a phone company building, you may be able to get Ethernet over Copper but that is very rare and not available in most areas. Most business owners and managers have purchased a “Shared” Internet solution from their current provider.  This means they have a big download speed and a teeny tiny upload speed.  This has been the norm for the past several years.   “Dedicated” Internet is delivered with the same upload speed and download speed.  When its dedicated the bandwidth is only and all yours. No sharing with your neighbors.  But if you are sharing your internet with all your neighbors, you can usually get something like 45mb down and 2mb up or maybe 100mb down and 5mb up. This will fluctuate of course since you are sharing the bandwidth.  When you have dedicated internet and since its all yours, you may have a 10mb up and 10mb down connections. Or 100mb up and 100mb down. Or 1000mb up and 1000mb down.  Dedicated means no sharing and its all yours.  Very cool!!

 

Just so you know, the FCC considers broadband service as a connection with a download speed of 25mb and an upload of 3mb. Wouldn’t it be great if your business had 500mb or maybe 1 Gigabit Speeds!!  

 

Copper wire was built out to your business location as a T1, DSL or Coax Internet option.  Shared Broadband primarily, but the really big Internet speeds was relegated as big connections between the big providers.  We used to call them “Long Haul” connections over Fiber.  All of the Cellular towers primarily used Fiber to connect back to the cellular networks, for example.

 

The signal for copper Internet networks degrades as the signal is carried from the phone company building a.k.a central office (CO).  Fiber doesn’t.

 

How far can light travel in a fiber optic cable?

The speed of light in a vacuum is 299,792,458 meters per second, or 186,282 miles per second. In normal optical fibers (silica glass), Internet over fiber is a bit slower than the speed of light, but with the massively faster speeds all you may need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and you’ll be fine.

 

Whoa… loads of places get hacked all the time these days.  It’s really bogus to be hacked and if we don’t get some cool rules ourselves – Pronto, we’ll just be bogus too.    

 

First off, if someone tries to tap into a fiber-optic cable, there is a big chance that the glass fiber will break. When this happens an alarm happens and notifies the maintenance professionals of exactly where the tap or break occurred and the hack attempt would most likely fail immediately.

 

Here are some big words for the science kids in Mr. Vargas’s class. Electromagnetic signals are not radiated by fiber-optic cables because they are dielectric, meaning they do not transmit electricity. That means to most of us in Mr. Hand’s class that your business data is nearly impossible to be intercepted by sensitive hacker’s antennas.  Copper cables, on the other “hand”, can be picked up by sensitive antennas no problem. The cable’s radiated energy can be intercepted and eavesdropping can occur. Its crazy, but the electromagnetic signals can be tapped without any indication you’ve been hacked at all.

 

If you have Copper based Internet now, you probably know that outages can happen far too often. Temperature variations, windy-icy-severe weather conditions, and plain old water or moisture can cause a loss of connectivity quickly. Old or worn copper cable can even be a fire hazard, due to the fact it carries an electric current. Yikes! How about screwing up your consistency and dependability of your copper Internet because of interference from electronic or radio signals. Also, your copper wires are accessed in the building by telephone company people and sometimes they can make mistakes and mess with the wrong cable… yours!!!  Copper wires all go back to the telephone company’s Central Office where disconnections happen frequently. Your Fiber Internet is independent of the old phone company infrastructure, their old termination points, and their old equipment.

 

The speed of the Internet transmitted over copper cable is directly related to the weight of cable installed in your business. To reach much higher speeds, more cable must be used, which requires more space in your telecommunications room.  Fiber Internet cable’s speed is not connected to its size, and it’s a far lighter weight than copper. This makes it easier to use, and requires very little room in your telecommunications area.

 

Copper cable is a relatively delicate technology. Typically, it can sustain about 25 pounds of pressure without being compromised, which means it can be damaged or put into one of your many “outages” very easily during routine operations anywhere along the way.  But fiber Internet can resist about 200 pounds of pressure, meaning it is far less likely to be damaged during routine operations.

 

Righteous Bucks!  Investing in fiber internet can cost more than copper in the short term.  But over the past few months the price has been cut dramatically.  Ultimately, the total cost of ownership (TCO) over the lifetime of fiber is lower. It’s more durable, cheaper to maintain, and requires less hardware, not to mention what the cost is to be suffering another “outage”. The rewards of having fiber Internet make it overall, a more cost-effective investment for your business or any business of any size.
